what is the law on having a cannabis plant visibly growing on a window sill or somewhere in your home?
i am currently learning social work at college and have been asked what i would do if i went to a service users home and they had a cannabis plant visible. I know this is illegal but what is the law on growing cannabis (without the lights, vents etc) and what would you as a social worker be expected to do – would you confront the client or report it to a superior and go from there?
Unless the person has legal permission to grow said plant, well, its illegal.
I don’t know if this is going to earn you brownie points, but when I was a Social Worker, I looked the other way many times, and verbally repremanded without reporting it. Think about what would happen…your superior would be put in the same position of what to do, and would more than likely be compelled to report it. What would happen if someone got arrested? Would children be put in foster care? Would a job be lost, and so on. It is going to be up to you to asses whether this is a problem, and you can’t really just pluck and example out of the air and make blanket decisions — this is why it is called ‘case’ work, you have to take each case as you see it. The bottom line, marijuana is a pretty petty ‘drug,’ and not worth the hassle to the people or the agency or the police.
If the home is neat and clean, and the children look well cared for…isn’t that the important thing, really?
