Autistic child with sudden aggressive behavior?
Our son is 9 with severe autism and is non-verbal and has some self abusive behaviors (He is not on any medications)
At the start of the school year he was doing great and made a lot of gains and his teacher was really impressed.
Christmas vacation hit and then he got sick- flu, then sinus infection (still has a cough even now) As of recently he has become very irritable, excess saliva (which he plays with now) bad sleeping patterns, spitting, has been having many meltdowns with extreme self abusive episodes, has started kicking and today at school he hit his aide with his choice ruler (floppy plastic ruler with PECS velcroed to it) and apparent hurt her arm rather bad and kicked another student in the side.
Can a child this young be going through puberty? Can he still be sick? Is it possible the antibiotics didn’t clear his sinus infection?, Could he be having sub clinical seizures?
Any advice or info would be much appreciated

Based on my child, who is now 17, I believe prepuberty does have an impact on children with ASDs.
It is very important that you rule out strep throat, that can have an extreme effect on behavior.
In the school environment they should conduct an Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), develop a behavior intervention plan (BIP – with a focus on INTERVENTION, not punishment, I highly recommend Positive Behavior Supports).
In the home environment you may want to do Your Own assessment, just keep a simple chart, list behaviors you wish to target, but include positive behaviors as well. It simply needs to have, date/time, behavior and comments. In the comments include what happened prior, during and after (were there any calming activities that helped). Don’t analyze it right away, do it for a couple of weeks and then review it, it may help you to address his needs.
During this time the most important thing you can do is LOVE him unconditionally, and demonstrate it often, if he should start to become upset, ask him if he needs a hug, be calm, be quiet, keep your emotions in check.
